Digitization trends in the news & media industry

Today the news and media industry are at the stage of transition. The way people devour news today has altered with digitization. Traditional newspapers and media platform are now looking at digital opportunity for revolution. The Media Industry is looking out ways to attract and retain its readership. People want news as it happens. Anything that is pertinent and significant to them should reach them in an immediate, anytime & anywhere. The technology trends are modifying the media landscape. Here is a glance to know as how the media industry can use digitization to reinvent itself:

Design in content layouts:
The reading habits of the people have changed with digital platforms. Today users spend most of the time online understanding and reading content on their tablet and mobile devices. Design thinking helps to generate digital news stage that can serve the wants of the readers. The layout of the news portal can be customized according to the reading behavior, lifestyle and preference of the users for information flow. The content layout for the news can be selected by users as per their chosen reading habits.

Digitized platform for news:
The digital platform can bring news updates spot on time. These platforms can be updated at a higher occurrence than traditional media platforms. The trending topics change rather frequently through the day and digital is the only way to stay modernized, updated and simplified with the users. The digital platform can give instant news updates to its consumers or users. The digital platform can also facilitate faster publishing & can reach a wide audience in real time.

Personalization of news & content:
When users contact the news portal, they can receive the contents adapted according to their penchant & history. The personalization of content is vital with so much information excess. The users can select the topics, categories, and even content basis from social media to get tailored news. They can also choose the news layouts that they desire.

Organising diversity in content:
The interactive content is central to keep the consumers engaged today. The media industry relies on many types of content for reaching the users. They use high-resolution videos, ariticles, graphic, ebooks/magazines, Info graphics, animations, polls etc. All this can be managed quite efficiently and successfully with an online platform.

Social sharing:
The digital newspapers can be produced for the users based on the subject of their interest and are topical in nature. Every user can get the personalized copy of the e-paper according to their liking. The users can also share this personalized copy of the newspapers using a web link on social media networks like Twitter, Facebook, G+, Whatsapp etc. This creates a distinctive and persuasive social sharing experience.

The media companies are taking on digitization and design to meet the requirements of their consumers. Digitization has changed the way how content is selected, created, distributed and monetized. The digital technology has created prosperity of chance for media companies and does brought new avenues in the news and media industry.

Land Use-Land Cover

In an urban environment natural and human-induced environmental changes are of concern today because of deterioration of environment and human health. The study of land use/land cover (LU/LC) changes is very important to have proper planning and exploitation of natural resources and their management. Land use/ land cover are two separate terminologies which are often used interchangeably. In general, the term land cover represents the observed (bio)-physical cover on the Earth’s surface. It includes vegetation and man-made features as well as bare rock, bare soil, and inland water surfaces. While land use refers to the way in which land has been used by humans and their habitat, usually with the accent on the functional role of land for economic activities. Land use/land cover data sets are primary inputs for environmental modelling and monitoring, natural resources management, policy-making, carbon cycle studies, hydrology and global climate change analysis.

Various types of types of land use are as follows:

  • Recreational - fun, non-essentials like parks.
  • Commercial - businesses and factories.
  • Residential - housing.
  • Agricultural - farmland.
  • Transport - roads, railways, and airports.

Remote sensing is becoming an important tool for developing and understanding the global and physical processes affecting the earth. Recent development in the application of satellite data is to take advantage of increasing amounts of geographical data available in conjunction with GIS to assist in interpretation. GIS is an integrated system of computer hardware and software capable of capturing, storing, retrieving, manipulating, analysing, and displaying geographically referenced (spatial) information for the purpose of aiding development-oriented management and decision-making processes. Various types of remote sensing images are:

  • Visible imagery: Visible satellite pictures can only be viewed only during the day, since light is reflected from the clouds.
  • Infrared imagery: Infrared satellite pictures are visible in both day and night and use the concept of heat radiation.
  • Water vapor imagery: Water vapor satellite pictures indicate how much moisture is present in the upper atmosphere

Land use/land cover (LULC) information is very crucial for the selection, planning and implementation of management strategies to meet the increasing demands for basic needs and welfare of the ever growing population.

Hence, proper knowledge and application of LU/LC is necessary for implementation of  various developments, planning, and land use schemes for meeting up the increasing demands of basic human needs.

TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS IN BUSINESS

Innovation means introducing something new into your business. There were several innovations in business in the past 50 years that have created a landscape, which is completely alien to the working environments of those working only 50 years ago. The pace of change has been phenomenal as well as the amount of new technology and new processes has meant that we now work in a completely new way. The following are the biggest innovations that will change your business:
Social media management
Social media can really help business take off, but managing Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram can take up valuable time. Management platforms such as Hootsuite allow you to manage the whole thing at once, saving valuable time and giving flexibility in tough times.
Big data
It might seem like just a big buzzword, but even small businesses can benefit from big data. Technology such as ClearStory Data, InsightSquared or even good old Google Analytics can help you to make sense of your traffic and your consumer decisions, to predict demand and trends in future.
Cloud computing
Storing our data in the cloud instead of on physical servers can help you do more with less. It also do collaboration easier while working remotely, with access available anywhere at any time.
CRM and inventory management
Managing customer relationships as well as your inventory using specialist software that can help ensure you do not put a foot wrong. Try Zoho, Insightly or Salesforce are used for CRM.
Risk-management software
Want to ensure you are dealing with trustworthy customers, or check who has access to your data? Clever technology can do that for you. Try BehavioSec, which analyses your staff’s typing and mouse movements and alerts you if someone else is logging in. Duedil, meanwhile, gives metrics indicating how solvent various companies are.
Communication
Whether it is Skype, Facetime or a full VOIP service, internet-based communication systems can cut costs - particularly if you are a team working in far-flung locations. These systems often require no little or no investment in hardware, and can use apps to synchronize on-the-road communication with office phone systems. Some new systems even provide virtual receptionists, advanced call screening and forwarding rules and integration with office software (for a fee).

Personality Development Course for Management Students

Most management colleges have started personality development lectures for their students by giving a twist to regular lectures. While in some MBA colleges students are buried in their syllabus, students at other B-schools are getting lessons on personality development too. To do something different, interesting and also of use to the students, management colleges have started this practice. Students are now attending classes in confidence-building through speech-delivery and overall personality development. These classes are going on for students of all the years in the MBA colleges. Students participate in these kinds of practical sessions and moreover, students give very interesting feed-back. They really like these classes as they are getting ready for jobs through the use of these classes. B-schools should continue such sessions for the future batches as well.

It’s good to see students absorbing new developments and changes in their course curriculum so well. Management colleges conduct personality development programmes on learning skills, memory retention and recall, introspection and self-analysis, positive attitude, assertive behavior, communication skills, public speaking, discussion skills etc. in which students are given lessons on developing their all round personality. MBA course has emphasized the need of development of all round personality along with academic achievements as a major prerequisite. And, to fulfill this requirement B-schools are doing it well on their parts.

Other prerequisite is that the learners should have complete knowledge of English since the students  take up this course at an advanced level and their interest  needs to be developed in participating actively in all role-plays, presentations etc. The Personality Development Course revolves around Theory with Practical implementation in day to day life. Assignments are based on theoretical part so as to understand how to write in more efficient way.  All the sessions start with the lecture, which in turn leads to develop confidence among students. This grooms a youngster, that’s why each and every MBA college has now decided to introduce personality development lessons for its students.

This kind of new subject will focus on improving personality of the students and teaching the skills that would help them in succeeding in all spheres of life. Also, students get some relaxation by getting lessons on personality development besides their regular academic lectures. It is something different which is not only interesting but also of educative nature. The objective of the programme is to inculcate essential skills to enhance the employability of students in different companies and MNCs by developing the business writing and presentation skills in the management students. To build confidence in students, they should be clear about their own personality, character and future goals.

As parents and teachers play an important role in shaping the future and inducing positive thoughts in the youth, they also contribute to positive development of personality in them by imparting these types of skills. Personality Development Course helps students in: Developing interpersonal skills, How to write reports, Develop Presentation skills and leadership quality and skills. Top management colleges have always been at the forefront of innovative teaching methods and this new feature just adds another feather to their cap....

BLOCKCHAINING TECHNOLOGY

Modern technology allows people to communicate directly - voice and video calls, emails, pictures and instant messages travel directly from A to B. Maintaining trust between individuals no matter how far apart they are. When it comes to money people have to trust a third party to be able to complete a transaction. Block chaining technology revolutionize the way we interact with each other. With the use of math and cryptography blockchain provides an Open Decentralized Database of every transaction involving value - money, goods, property, work or even votes, creating a record whose authenticity can be verified by the entire community.
Blockchain stores information in batches, called blocks that are linked together in a chronological order to form a chain of blocks, changes made to a piece of information recorded in a particular block are not reflected in that block, instead a new block is created depicting that piece of information is changed along with the timestamp. Blockchaining is based on general financial ledger method, that is a non-destructive way to track data changes over time.
But, unlike the centuries old ledger method where the data or entries are recorded inside a book and then stored in a database file on a system, blockchain is designed to be decentralized and is distributed over a large network of computers. This feature of blockchaining reduces data tampering. Wherein, before a block can be added to the chain:
  • It has to be encrypted and respective computer has to share the decryption details to all the other computers over the network. This is called proof-of-work.
  • The network then verifies this proof-of-work,
  • And if it is correct then the block is added to chain.
The combination of these cryptographic mathematical puzzles and verification by many computers over the network ensures that the data in each bock in the chain can be trusted.
This significant feature allows us to interact with the data in real time directly and that is where this technology challenges the status quo in a radical way by eliminating the intermediaries. Any transaction over the internet involves third party trust organization or intermediaries that keeps the information confidential. These intermediaries build trust between the parties and are helpful for verification. This technique restricts the exposure of information and also regulates the risk involved. But it adds up another constraint, that is of more time and money spent. If this information is stored in a blockchain then anyone with access to the internet can get involved in blockchain base transaction and third-party trust organizations may no longer be necessary which saves a lot of time and money.
Blockchain technology allows us to have a trusted peer-to-peer interaction with our data and can be implemented in many different ways - Some blockchains can be public, where everyone can view and access the information, while some blockchains can be private limiting the access to a particular organization or a group of users. And, there are hybrid blockchains combining public-private blockchains, where some data is accessible to a group of people while some is accessible to all on the network, but only few have exclusive right to update the data in the blockchain.
The future economy is going to witness a global decentralized source of trust which will be the combination of all the factors such as decentralization of data, building trust in the data and allowing us to interact directly with one another and the data. But not everyone is ready to embrace it as it brings with it many complicated policy questions framing the governance, security and economics.

Indigence of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare

Artificial intelligence is defined as the science and engineering of creating intelligent computer systems that are able to perform tasks without receiving instructions directly from humans. These computer systems use a number of different algorithms and decision-making capabilities, as well as vast amounts of data, to provide a solution or response to a request. Today, more than ever, many technology vendors are making significant investments in AI to ensure they are able to offer solutions and services that can use the technology. Microsoft, Google, Apple, IBM and Amazon, to name a few, have all adopted and fully committed to AI and are already providing these services to consumers.

Artificial intelligence (AI) aims to mimic human cognitive functions. It is bringing a paradigm shift to healthcare, powered by increasing availability of healthcare data and rapid progress of analytics techniques. AI can be applied to various types of healthcare data. Popular AI techniques include machine learning methods for structured data, such as the classical support vector machine and neural network, and the modern deep learning, as well as natural language processing for unstructured data. Major disease areas that use AI tools include cancer, neurology and cardiology. The most popular use of artificial intelligence in healthcare is in IBM's smart cloud, where Watson lives. The Watson platform has been used in a number of disciplines within healthcare including with payers, oncology and patient risk assessment.
Anytime a new technology enters healthcare, there are a number of challenges it faces. Common setbacks of artificial intelligence in healthcare include a lack of data exchange, regulatory compliance requirements and patient and provider adoption. AI has come across all of these issues, narrowing down the areas in which it can succeed.
The following are four areas in which artificial intelligence in healthcare is gaining steam.
Health Wellness Virtual Assistant
The application of AI in the form of a personal assistant can have an incredible impact on monitoring and assisting patients with some of their needs when clinical personnel are not available. Healthcare apps can be used to deliver medication alerts, patient education material and human-like interactions to gauge a patient's current mental state. Google Deepmind and G Suite aim to solve patient record complications by providing a secure, yet convenient way to access and transfer records while adhering to HIPAA rules and regulations.
Research Analytics on Healthcare records
The capabilities of AI do not stop at understanding human commands and knowing what type of response is needed. For example, AI has been used in many advanced use cases in oncology to help detect abnormalities in X-rays and MRIs, in genomics to perform complex processing and in precision medicine to provide assistance in creating highly customized treatments for individual patients. For example IBM Watson, the AI has successfully applied its capabilities to process structured and unstructured patient data. In the field of oncology, IBM Watson can provide evidence-based treatment recommendations for cancer patients.
Personalised Health Monitoring
Care providers who treat patients with chronic diseases recognize the importance of maintaining contact with their patients outside of the exam room. Several hospitals have introduced life coaching services as part of their overall care, but the cost of such services compared to the current shrinking reimbursements makes it difficult to sustain such programs. However, with today's robust AI capabilities and mobile apps, patients can receive feedback on a number of data elements captured on their phone or wearable devices. Whether it relates to medication adherence or is simply a motivational voice that encourages fitness activities and healthy habits, AI as a personal life coach creates a customized experience for each individual patient and offers proactive alerts that can be sent back to physicians.
Robotic Healthcare Application
One of the new areas of AI that is beginning to gain adoption is in the field of customer service, and healthcare robots are likely to be available soon as part of what healthcare providers offer. A software robot is an AI application patients can interact with through a chat window on a website or via telephone to receive help with their requests. These applications can be used in situations such as scheduling follow-up appointments with a patient's provider online.
Following is an interesting video showing important use of AI in field of healthcare. This film is the showcase of a project undertaken by Samsung and Asha Ek Hope foundation, who are developing the first personalized Artificial Intelligence based Voice assistant for a patient suffering from Motor Neuron Disease, in which patients lose their ability to move and speak.
